A fire sprinkler is an active fire protection device that is part of an automatic sprinkler system designed to detect and suppress fires. The system consists of a network of pipes filled with water, with individual sprinkler heads spaced throughout the building. Each sprinkler head is equipped with a heat-sensitive element that activates the sprinkler when it detects high temperatures, typically caused by a fire.

1. Detection of Heat: Each sprinkler head contains a heat-sensitive element, usually a glass bulb filled with liquid or a metal fusible link. The element is designed to break or melt at a specific temperature, usually around 155°F (68°C) to 200°F (93°C), depending on the design of the system.

2. Activation: When the heat from a fire causes the heat-sensitive element to break or melt, it opens the sprinkler head, releasing water from the system.

3. Water Dispersion: The water is then sprayed over the fire, suppressing or extinguishing it. Unlike fire hoses, sprinklers are designed to target the immediate area of the fire, limiting water damage by containing the fire to a small region.

4. Localized Response: Only the sprinkler heads near the heat source activate; the system is designed so that only those directly affected by the fire will discharge water. This prevents the entire system from going off at once, reducing water damage to the rest of the building.
